Together as an organization started in early 2017 under the name “La Convivencia” which commemorated a period in Islamic Spain when Muslims, Christians and Jews lived and worked together in harmony. It was started under the guidance of Tasneem Sultan, formerly of West Windsor, NJ and her sons who had been studying this period of history, at a time when inter-religious tensions in America were reaching dangerous levels, stoked by the political changes of the times.
After Tasneem and her family moved to the Midwest, it was decided in 2021 to reorganize La Convivencia under a name that was more immediately understandable, and to simplify its administration by becoming a project under the Coalition for Peace Action in Princeton, which shares many of our goals. After much consideration, the name “TOGETHER–Building Inclusive and Just Community ” was chosen as a means of describing our core motivation. But our mission has remained unchanged since the earliest days.
