Nuclear Arms “Modernization”. How Can People of Good Will Respond?

The US is now pursuing a $1.7 trillion program to upgrade its nuclear arsenal. In response, other nuclear armed states are doing likewise, resulting in a dangerous, costly arms race. Multiple arms limitation treaties have been abandoned or are soon to expire. Most people are unaware of this ongoing program, but elected officials control the direction of our national defense posture, and popular pressure could sway the direction toward treaties and away from ever more hazardous nuclear armaments. This program will discuss the modernization program, and address how a person of good will can exert such influence.

Bridget Moix 

Bridget Moix is the fifth General Secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). She also leads two other Quaker organizations, affiliated with FCNL: Friends Place on Capitol Hill and FCNL Education Fund. Bridget joined FCNL in January 2022. She brings with her 25 years of work on international peace and conflict issues, with a focus on US foreign policy. Prior to joining FCNL, she served as US Executive Director of Peace Direct (2015-2021). She is a passionate Quaker peace advocate, activist, and mother.

The Rev. Robert Moore 

The Rev. Robert Moore has served since 1981 as full-time Executive Director of the Princeton, NJ-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA), a regional organization dedicated to global abolition of nuclear weapons, a peace economy, and a halt to weapons trafficking. From 1988-2014, he also served as part-time Pastor of East Brunswick Congregational Church, and from 2014-2016 as part-time Co-Pastor of Christ Congregation in Princeton.

Yesenia Rodriguez Pizarro

Yesenia Rodriguez Pizarro is a scholar-activist from the Claremont Colleges with a focus on international relations and global treaties. Her research emphasizes the rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly in Latin America. She has conducted fieldwork in Ecuador’s Oriente region, exploring the enforcement of Indigenous sovereignty under international frameworks like the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Yesenia is passionate about the role of young leaders in shaping the future of global governance and treaty compliance.

Ed Aguilar, J.D., has been the Pennsylvania Director of CFPA since July of 2012. A Philadelphia lawyer and graduate of Temple Law School, Ed practiced civil rights and international law. He was Executive Director of the Project for Nuclear Awareness, and Pennsylvania president of the Lawyers Alliance for World Security. Ed lives in Mt. Airy with his lovely wife Conna, a former Museum department director, and they have two wonderful (grown) children, Cris and Maebh Aguilar.
