The famed Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was recently moved to 85 seconds to midnight, meaning the world is closer to nuclear war than ever before. Closer than at the start of the nuclear arms race in the 1950s. Closer than during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Closer than the height of the Cold War in the 1980s.
Last September, Russian President Putin offered to extend for a year the limits of the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty, New START. But Trump just rejected that. So it expired on February 5, opening the door to an unfettered New Nuclear Arms Race! This backward thinking only accelerates a race to the bottom that has deadly consequences for all of humanity.
Moreover, nuclear weapons are hugely expensive, with a 29% increase in the 2026 budget. The so-called nuclear modernization program--which is actually a huge build-up--is estimated to cost $2 trillion!
That’s why CFPA is working day in, day out to turn back the clock: Mobilizing the grassroots to act on this warning and push Congress away from greenlighting Trump’s plans to upend an era of hard fought arms control agreement, restart nuclear weapons testing, and pour fuel on the fire of a global nuclear arms race with dangerous, expensive weapons.

For 16 years and counting, the Doomsday Clock has only moved forward. This year, the Clock ticked four seconds closer, a dangerous signal of how close we are to irreversible disaster.
The good news is it’s not too late to turn back the clock. In response to a massive Nuclear Freeze mobilization in the 1980s, the United States joined the Soviet Union in 1991 to sign the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). They committed to scaling down their nuclear stockpiles, and scientists moved the Clock a full seven minutes backward.
