CFPA's Donor Committee is now kicking off its annual Donor Drive, making individualized approaches to supporters who donate $100 or more each year. If you are not in that category, this would be a great time to strengthen CFPA's financesto support our intensive efforts toward maximizing our impact in this crucial Election Year and beyond.
First and foremost, I hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe! We have all faced unprecedented challenges since the pandemic struck in force. The immense loss of life and livelihood has been catastrophic, and the failures of our militaristic society have come into focus.
Exorbitant military spending has proved useless in the face of the greatest security threat since World War II. Yet, 54% of the proposed 2021 budget Congress is able to allocate is for the military, and $2 trillion is proposed to escalate US nuclear weapons. We need N95 masks, not F35 fighter planes!
New priorities are essential to healthy life on Earth, now and for all future generations. The Trump administration de-funded essential pandemic monitoring and preparation, then dithered for months after the first cases showed up. Indeed, instead of focusing on preventing disasters, Trump has recklessly and repeatedly threatened to use US nuclear weapons, while the use of even 5% of our arsenal could cause two billion deaths!
Additionally, a pattern of over-reliance on economic sanctions in the place of real diplomacy delays life-saving humanitarian aid for the citizens of Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea.
New US national leadership is utterly essential! We’ve now lost more lives to COVID-19 than to the Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq Wars combined! While some balance of power was restored with the 2018 US House elections, we now urgently need a new President and Senate.
Because of this urgent need, the Coalition for Peace Action has prioritized our Peace Voter 2020 campaign to educate and mobilize on behalf of peace in this year’s rapidly approaching elections. Despite the pandemic, we’ve run a strong (mostly virtual) Peace Voter campaign for the primary in NJ District 2, as well as in advocating for secure and safe paper ballot voting.
We’ve also transitioned to online events: our Earth Day webinars were attended by over 250, and we continue our regular committee meetings by Zoom and conference call.
We are looking forward to our two-part Virtual Membership Gathering featuring Professors Noam Chomsky and Michael Klare on June 10 and 14; click here for details.
Now we need your help to rapidly intensify our efforts to have maximum impact for peace as we approach the critical inflection point of the 2020 Elections.
We need your generous response to help meet urgent challenges above. Please click here to make your 2020 donation for peace!
